Every now and then, I like to indulge in a sweet treat. My go to is always something chocolate, and especially with the frigid temps we’ve had on the East Coast this Winter, hot cocoa has been on my mind…and in my cup.

The definition of indulgence is very different to me now than what it used to be.  I have always had a sweet tooth and I think by now, at the age of 33, that’s probably not going to change. What has changed over time is what I qualify as satisfyingly sweet vs. sickeningly sweet. In my younger years, I loved milk chocolate and hated dark chocolate. Now it’s the complete opposite – I even enjoy eating some 100% dark chocolate bars! So when I want something sweet, I’m usually looking for the following qualifications:

  • Must have chocolate
  • Must contain less than 8g added sugar/serving
  • Must have some healthy fats or protein to balance out the sugar
  • The higher the protein the better
  • Can I sneak in some extras for health benefit like various spices, essential oils, mushroom powder, etc.

So here is what I came up with for a really satisfying hot chocolate that also meets every single one of the above qualifications!

2 scoops Further Food Collagen Powder (Use code OUTSIDETHEBOX10 at checkout for 10% off!)

1 heaping tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (I love NuNaturals’)

1 tsp Nunaturals Cocoa Syrup (Use code OUTSIDETHEBOX25 at checkout for 25% an order of $35 or more)

10oz. Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk

2 tbsp SO Delicious Coconut Creamer or full fat canned coconut milk

Optional Delicious Toppings:

SO Delicious CocoWhip, NuNaturals Cocoa Syrup drizzle, cacao nibs, mini marshmallows (I like Dandies)

How to make:

This is an easy one! Put everything in a blender and blend! Pour into a really large mug and heat in the microwave for 1:30. Keep an eye on it as the collagen froth will expand as it heats. You don’t want this to overflow or you’ll have a mess to clean up! I recommend doing it this way because it’s also not a good idea to put really hot liquids in a blender… just breaks the seal and then you’ll have hot cocoa in all the crevices of your blender. NO Bueno!

Finally, add your favorite toppings and enjoy! Or, skip the toppings for an even lower sugar treat!

Collagen is an odorless, flavorless powder that easily mixes with liquids, so it’s a no brainer anytime I’m making something liquid to add a scoop of collagen. I try to get in at least 1 scoop of collagen every day because the amino acids found in collagen have been shown to help improve skin elasticity (read: less cellulite/wrinkles), strengthen hair and nails (who doesn’t need that?), and improve the integrity of the digestive tract lining. That last one will help assist your body in absorbing more nutrients from the food you’re eating and also help regulate bowel movements.

Collagen is the most abundant protein naturally occuring in our bodies. It makes up 90% connective tissue and organic bone mass, and 70% of our skin tissue! If we already have so much, why do we need more?

Well, according to the researchers at Further Food, our bodies start producing less collagen once we reach our 20s and then it continues to decline from there. Taking collagen in through our diets can help replace that loss helping us to maintain strong hair, nails, and healthy looking skin! I also have a few clients who have been using it consistently for the last few months and have noticed less joint pain!
