THE SUPER BOWL IS HERE!!!

And all the parties associated with it are not going to help you stay on track with your new clean eating habits. Or can they?
Here are SEVEN tips to be Super Bowl Successful:

#1 – Host a party at your own home. This way you have much more control of what food is available to you. You can also “control” the people you surround yourself with and make sure they are supportive of your health goals.

#2 – Go to a friend’s house where you may feel less inclined to drink alcohol and can easily bring 21 DSD compliant foods.

#3 – If you are going to a bar or restaurant, check the menu ahead of time and make sure there are some items you will be able to eat. You never want to feel deprived and watching everyone around you eat and drink for 4-5 hours while you suck down plain old H2O is not anyone’s definition of fun.

#4 – No matter what you do for the Super Bowl, make sure to eat a normal sized healthy breakfast and lunch earlier that day so you are not starving by party time. Maybe even get in a quick workout, whether at the gym or at home so you don’t feel so bad if you over-indulge on more (clean) food than you normally would.

#5 – Bring a large (filled) water bottle with you. Many common Super Bowl snacks are very salty and if you don’t quench your thirst in between bites you will end up taking thirst as hunger and eat way too much food.

#6 – Try infusing your water with lemon and ginger root to aid in digestion. Or bring a few digestive enzyme tabs with you if you have been using them. This way, if you do overeat, you will be able to get some relief without having your stomach blow up like a balloon! When you get home later that night, if your stomach does feel like a balloon, try my ACV Digestion Tea:
In 10oz. of hot water, mix 1 tbsp Bragg’s Raw Apple Cider Vinegar + 1 tbsp Raw Honey + 2-3 tsp lemon juice. You should feel better within 20 minutes.

#7 – If you are planning to spend the late afternoon/evening watching Football and mingling with friends, make sure to do your meal prep for Monday on Saturday or Sunday AM prior to the festivities. Don’t use the Super Bowl as an excuse to have a cheat day on Monday!

OK! So you’re ready to make some healthy snacks for Sunday! Where to start?

How about Juli Bauer of PaleOMG’s 48 Paleo Super Bowl Snacks? If you are currently on The 21 DSD, watch out for things like Maple Syrup, Cashews, Honey, and fruit that is not a green tipped banana, grapefruit, or green apple. Many of the recipes that contain these ingredients you can still make and just leave them out! For example, the bacon meatballs with mango honey mustard, you could use the “No-honey mustard” recipe found on p. 202 of The 21 Day Sugar Detox Cookbook.

Some of my personal favorites are:

Mini Buffalo Chicken Egg Muffins – watch out! These will go fast! Make in a mini muffin tin for a bite sized version. 21 DSD approved

This Homemade Olive Oil recipe makes a great base for creamy dips, sauces, and dressings. It’s dairy free and 21DSD approved!

Almond Flour Chicken Tenders are easy to make and great for parties. This is also a fun recipe to have your kids help you make. 21 DSD approved and would be great with the no honey mustard recipe mentioned above.

Roasted Beet or Kale Chips are a fun snack to put out. For Kale chips, just toss in EVOO and sea salt and bake in oven at 350 until crispy. These will cook much faster than the beets – only about 5-10 minutes. Both should be served immediately to retain crispy texture.

The next question is what to drink??? Well water of course is a great option. As mentioned in tip #5 it’s important to stay hydrated so that you don’t mistake thirst for hunger and over eat. If you feel left out while everyone else is indulging in beverages of the alcoholic variety, try a Kombucha or Sparkling Water. I really like G.T.’s Synergy flavored Kombucha’s and La Croix’s Sparking Waters. Sometimes I will even mix the two to draw the Kombucha out a bit more and water down the flavor as they are a bit pungent at first. You could do Mango La Croix with Mystic Mango Kombucha or Cran-Raspberry La Croix with Cosmic Cranberry Kombucha for example. Whatever you decide on, pour it in a rocks glass, wine glass, or red solo cup if that’s your thing and drink it out of a straw. Maybe even add a slice of fruit. It’s all about presentation people!
